Buying Guide
- Filtration strengths: Look for true HEPA or high-efficiency filtration rated to capture fine particles (0.3 microns or smaller). Check whether the filter is reusable or disposable and the cost of replacement filters.
- Capacity and portability: Choose a size that matches your typical workload. Smaller 4–5 gallon units are easier to move; larger 12–16 gallon vacuums handle bigger messes but require more storage.
- Power and suction: Higher wattage or horsepower generally equates to stronger suction. Ensure the motor and filters are designed to handle the materials you’ll clean (dust, drywall debris, liquids).
- Filtration for fine dust vs. bulk debris: Some vacuums use basic bags, while others feature HEPA or cartridge filters. For homes with pets or allergens, prioritize HEPA filtration and sealed systems.
- Accessories and versatility: A blower port, hoses, nozzles, and extension wands expand use beyond vacuuming, including leaf blowing and garage cleanup.
- Maintenance and replacements: Check filter availability, ease of cleaning, and overall maintenance costs. Consider models with easy-access canisters and simple filter changes.
- Durability and build quality: Metal housings and robust casters improve longevity in shop environments. Look for reinforced components for heavy use.
- Noise and energy use: If you’ll run the vacuums indoors or in shared spaces, consider models with lower noise ratings and energy-efficient designs.
- Filter compatibility: Ensure replacement filters fit your chosen model. Some brands offer compatible or universal replacements that fit multiple models.
